Can it be? Is there still hope for Europe? I submit the following (and no, this is not a joke):
President of France calls for religion in schools
This has to be the single most encouraging bit of news from across the pond in months. I’m especially glad that Monsieur Sarkozy addressed the root issue: “Parents, vous êtes les premiers des éducateurs.” (”Parents, you are the primary educators,” which just happens to be the same thing put forward in the Catechism of the Catholic Church)
I’ll post something about one of French culture’s major crises (implosions?) in the next day or so. In the meantime, check out this article on the same story — there are links to related stories about Monsieur Sarkozy, including the full text of his address to educators (in French).

Wow! Sarkozy is really shaking things up over there. This is going to be an interesting thing to watch, because the French are very funy types of Catholics. They flipped out when Turkey (who was/is vying for a spot in the EU) elected a government that had some pretty strong ties to Islamic religious leaders, claiming that it is supposed to be a completely secularized government, yet hold their own State functions in Notre Dame Cathedral. I think the French have a certain kind of Catholic identity, perhaps this is the sort of thing that could pull them back from the brink? Thanks for the heads up Dave! This is some good news!
