Academic Freedom’s Slave

September 13th, 2007 · No Comments

I would like to take a few moments today to reflect upon academic freedom. This is the banner flew high above many universities today. Academic freedom is on the forefront of the progressive education experience. And who wouldn’t want freedom?

Recently, a student of mine told me about his film class, where he was assigned to watch a film that had many scenes that had people of the same sex engaging in intercourse. Is this academic freedom? Is this even art?

I know many people would could think of very thought out and rational arguments for why that would be academic freedom or art, but we need to take a step back from our culture of relativity and step into the realm of truth.

Freedom cannot be freedom if it leads to slavery. The fruits of freedom are peace and joy. People that are free do not usually look gloomy, act grumpy, or spend time in eroded by anger and passion. Why are so many scholars that preach the religion of academic freedom angry and obscure? This is not to knock scholars but a notion of freedom that is false.

People that are free jump for joy, sing, do cartwheels, laugh, and LOVE! In fact I am a promoter of scholarship, the scholarship of truth! Are you asking the real questions each day during your educational experience? What is right and wrong? Why does this exist? Who am I and what is my purpose?

There are answers in the realm of truth for all these and more. Attach your heart to the pursuit of freedom in truth and then you will not be this so-called freedom’s slave.
