Dear Applicant,

I’d like to thank you for considering serving Jesus Christ and His Church through FOCUS.  I am amazed every year by the increasing generosity of young people.  Your willingness to consider such a radical commitment to bring the love of Christ Jesus to others is a sure sign that we are entering the New Spring Time of the Church referred to by Pope John Paul II.
 

While on the cusp of a rebirth of faith, we still have much to do. Many are still lost in our culture, moving through life without knowing the fundamental reality of being God’s children.  Blessed Teresa of Calcutta speaks directly to the need of our culture when she said:

“It is too easy simply to talk or concern ourselves with the poor who are far away. It is much harder and, perhaps, more challenging to turn our attention and concern toward the [spiritually] poor who live right next door to us.  You in the West have the spiritually poorest of the poor much more than you have the physically poor. Often among the rich are very spiritually poor people. I find it is easy to give a plate of rice to a hungry person, to furnish a bed to a person who has no bed, but to console or to remove the bitterness, anger, and loneliness that comes from being spiritually deprived, that takes a long time.” 

FOCUS exists to courageously bring the healing power of Jesus to fill the hearts of the wounded in our culture.  It is a tremendous responsibility but a fulfilling one.

I know you have many paths before you.  The fact that you are here is a testimony to your talents and love for our Lord.  I am thankful for your time and for sharing your life with us throughout this weekend.  Wherever God may lead you, may you continue to keep Jesus at the center of your life.  Be assured of my prayers and the prayers of the FOCUS staff as you discern the next step in your life.
